Louis Pauchet

Mechanical engineering student and arctic enthusiast

From Catia to Svalbard

Enrolled in an integrated master degree in Mechanical Engineering at INSA Rouen Normandie, I discovered Norway and the high arctic of Svalbard during an Erasmus exchange at the University of Stavanger and at the University Center in Svalbard. I developed a wide range of skills from design office and 3D modeling to field operation in the arctic, including on boats.

A sense for passion

Through my education and experiences, I tried to build a skills’ toolbox to discover the world around me, trying to understand it and communicate it.

Data science and programming

Always attracted by computer science, I learned during my master degree and through different projects how to use Python in data science. I also worked with CRBasic, C and Bash.

Mechanics

Through my education, I got introduced to general and fluids mechanics, vibration and design office (CAD & CAM)

Instrumentation

From thermocouple to all-in-one automated weather station (AWS), I work during my different experiences with a variety of sensor, detectors and data logger system. All together with good basics in electronics and electricity.

Project management

Building a robot waiter or preparing a visualization solution on board of a boat, I took part in a variety of projects throughout my education and experiences.

Computer and Network Administration

Linux System, Windows Server (AD), Switch and Router, I developed a variety of skill in IT administration from on premise server to cloud infrastructure (Microsoft 365)

Field safety and risk management

As an experienced Svalbard guide and climbing instructor, I prioritize the safety of those I work with daily, from Polar Bear protection to Sea Ice safety.

Climate and Oceanography

My education in Polar Oceanography and Climate in the High Arctic, combined with my great interest in these subjects, has enabled me to understand the fundamentals of Arctic climatology and oceanography. This knowledge is further enhanced by observing the impacts of climate change on the Arctic.

Education and communication

Driven by the desire to share my passions, from rock climbing to scooter driving, I have learned how to educate my guests about climate change and the urgent need to act against it, using the natural environment as a classroom.
